About
About the Department:
The Department of Mathematics is one of the departments in the School of Physical Sciences and consists of about 30 employees (Academic and support staff). The mandate of the department is to teach Mathematics across the different colleges of the university, the core duties of the department are research, teaching and outreach. Our department actively participates in research in the various areas of Pure Mathematics (Algebra, Analysis, Geometry and Number theory and Discrete Mathematics) and Applied Mathematics (Biomathematics, Financial Mathematics, Mathematical Statistics and Computational Science) in a wide range of fields for example Health, Finance, Insurance, technology, climate and Epidemiology.
What can one do with a degree in Mathematics?
Mathematics is the engine for most if not all the basic sciences. Mathematics graduates given their training on problem solving techniques, logical thinking and ability to understand technical information can handle a wide range of challenging jobs in finance/banking/insurance, economics, statistics, computer and other sectors where mathematics is relevant. The concrete list of jobs a mathematics graduate can take on include but is not limited to the following;
- Epidimeologist
- Investment manager
- Banker/underwriter/insurance broker.
- Actuary/stock broker
- Teacher/professor/computer programmer
- Statistician/Research Scientist
- Ecological modeller/climate analyst.
Staff:
The dedicated staff at the Department of Mathematics consists of about 25 academic staff members, 2 graduate fellows and about 4 support staff.
Programmes:
The Department of Mathematics has the mandate to teach Mathematics in the university and thus teaches Mathematics courses in Engineering, Statistics, Education and other programmes that involve mathematics courses. The department participates in the teaching of mathematics mainly in the following programmes;
a) Bachelor of Science degree with Mathematics as a major or minor subject.

b) MSc. Mathematics
The MSc. Mathematics is a programme in pure Mathematics that explores the mathematics in general that is, mathematics that is done/studied without an immediate consideration for direct application but can be applied at a later time. The MSc. Mathematics program will involve training mathematicians who will demonstrate advanced and deep knowledge of many pure mathematics and related areas for example Algebra, Analysis, geometry and discrete mathematics and number theory. These mathematics areas are relevant in industry and can be applicable at any time.

c) MSc. Applied Mathematics: Applied Mathematics is an area of Mathematics that makes use of mathematical skills/techniques/methods to provide solutions/explanations to real world problems in a variety of fields including but not limited to: biology, medicine, engineering, computing and physics. In the recent past, mathematical techniques have been increasingly used in understanding and solving optimization problems, for example, in health, environment, climate change, insurance, finance, among others.

Career opportunities within science and technology are seeing unprecedented growth across the world, and so those who study Mathematics at university are seeing their career prospects develop right before their eyes. This also goes a long way to deployment fo the same in other fields, with applied mathematics taking the lead.
