PhD in Chemistry

Years: 3

The PhD Programme is currently by research and thesis only.
For several years now the department, through donor agencies and collaborative links with overseas universities, has acquired a number of modern research facilities, including an HPLC, U.V. Spectrophotometer, gas chromatographic equipment, atomic absorption equipment, and plenty of small teaching and research equipments. Members of staff have undertaken a number of research projects and many staff members have published papers in International journals.

Introduction

The Master of Science Degree program in Chemistry is designed to provide the first graduate degree for students who expect to continue on to advanced graduate study in chemistry. It can also be used to extend the competence of students who anticipate employment in chemical industries, in government laboratories, or as secondary/college school teachers.

Objectives of the programme
  1. To provide advanced knowledge in chemistry and applied chemistry to first degree holders.
  2. To develop researchers in chemistry and applied chemistry and nurture a quality assurance-conscious group of scientists in order to safeguard users of chemicals. In the process of fulfilling these objectives, it is our hope that:
  • The participants will develop critical and analytical attitudes and skills towards problem finding and solving.
  • The participants will have broader views on environmental problems and develop research oriented attitudes to environmental conservation.
The areas of specialization are:
  • Inorganic Chemistry
  • Organic Chemistry
  • Physical Chemistry
  • Applied Chemistry CourSe work (Part i) First Semester
