Mak Hosts 44th Annual National Mathematics Teachers’ Conference

On Friday 26th July 2024, Uganda Mathematical Society (UMS), a community engagement arm of Makerere University Mathematics Department held the 44th Annual National Mathematics Teachers’ Conference. This was followed by the prize giving ceremony for National Mathematics Contest (NMC) that took place on Saturday 27th July 2024 at Makerere University Rugby Grounds. Over 2000 students and pupils from all parts of Uganda attended the colourful event.

Awards were given to best 10 students at Primary, O-Level and A-Level. Regional winners among Primary school participants also walked away with prizes. The event featured a Quiz at Primary and Secondary level at Regional levels. Winners of the Quiz competition were also rewarded. NMC was also done at the University level and the top three were equally appreciated.

Primary schools that had winners included; St. Savio Junior School of Wakiso, Seeta Parents Primary School of Mukono, Namilyango Junior Boys’ School of Mukono, Leos Primary School of Masaka, Kings Way Primary School of Wakiso, Global Junior School of Mukono, Little Rina Nursery and Primary School of Wakiso, Mbuya Parents’ School of Kampala, Children of The Nation Primary School of Lira, V.H Public School of Lira, Mbale Tower Primary School, St. Michael Namunyumya Boarding Primary School of Iganga, St. Helen’s Primary School of Mbarara, Bweranyangi Junior Primary School of Bushenyi, Namagunga Primary Boarding School, Greenhill Primary School of Buwaate and DEZ Junior School.

Secondary Schools that had participants walking away with awards included; Light Academy Secondary School of Wakiso, Wampeewo Ntakke Secondary School of Wakiso, Bishop Cipriano Kihangire Secondary School of Kampala, King’s College Budo of Wakiso, Uganda Martyrs Secondary School Namugongo, Mengo Senior School, Mt. St. Mary’s College Namagunga, St. Andrew’s College Moyo and St. Maria Goretti Senior Secondary School Katende of Mpigi. The top three best students at University level were from Makerere, Gulu and Busitema Universities.

The event was graced by Prof. Sunday Angoma Okello of the Institute for Peace and Security Studies, University of Addis Ababa, Dr. Sinobia Kenny, the Academic Manager at the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences Schools Enrichment Centre (AIMSSEC), Mr. Satish Guna President of Rotary Club of Kampala Maisha, and Prof. Betty Nanyonga, the Chair of the Association of Women Mathematicians. There was also a delegation from the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU). ICPAU was greatly appreciated during the prize giving ceremony for their support towards UMS activities.

University National Mathematics Contest winners. 1st is Norman Enyang from Makerere University, 2nd is Joel Odida from Gulu University, and 3rd is Norah Akello from Busitema University
Primary National Mathematics Contest winners. 1st was Ethan Mutyaba Sserunjogi from St. Savio Junior School Kisubi, 2nd was Opule Alvan Shammah from Seeta Parents Primary School, and 3rd was Ngabonzira Nahum Golooba from Namilyango Junior Boys’ School
