CoNAS Freshers’ Orientation: Students Sensitized on College, University Programmes

Every year, Makerere University admits hundreds of students to various programmes in its 10 constituent Colleges. To enable the students to settle in, and acquaint themselves with the programmes and policies of the University, a week is dedicated to orientation. This year, the University opened its gates to freshmen and women on 3^rd August 2024. Inducting students into the University commenced on Monday, 5^th August 2024 with a University-wide orientation organized by the Office of the Academic Registrar and conducted in the Freedom Square.

Orientation of First Year students admitted to the College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS) was conducted on 7^th August 2024. Led by the Principal, Prof. Winston Tumps Ireeta, the College and University leaders sensitized the students on the programmes and policies of the University. In attendance were School Deans and Heads of Departments who briefed the students on the programmes in their respective Units. These included the Dean, School of Physical Sciences, Prof. Michael Owor; the Dean, School of Biosciences represented by the Head, Department of Biochemistry, Dr Agnes Nandutu Masawi; the Head, Department of Chemistry, Dr Emmanuel Tebandeke; the Head, Department of Geology and Petroleum Studies, Dr Arthur Batte; the Head, Department of Mathematics represented by Dr Joseph Ssebuliba; the Head, Department of Physics represented by Dr Daniel Mukiibi; the Head, Department of Zoology, Entomology, and Fisheries Sciences, Dr Godfrey Kawooya Kubiriza; the Head, Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology, and Biotechnology represented by Dr Godwin Anywar, and the Coordinator of the Sports Science Unit, Dr Bernadette Nakabazzi. Students were also sensitized on the registration and examination processes, ICT support services, library services, fees payment policies, the Anti-sexual Harassment Policy, counselling and guidance services, the emerging leaders programme, and general welfare at the University.

Lecturers are expected to commence on Monday, 12^th August 2024.
