Prof. Winston Tumps Ireeta, Principal, College of Natural Sciences, Makerere University Uganda

Welcome to the College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS), Makerere University. We are the heart of this great university, a community of more than 2,000 students and 153 academic and administrative staff spread in 2 schools namely; Physical Sciences and Biosciences. The departments under the School of Physical Sciences are; Chemistry, Physics, Geology and Petroleum Studies, and Mathematics. The School of Biosciences is composed of 3 departments namely; Zoology, Entomology and Fisheries Sciences; Plant Sciences, Microbiology & Biotechnology; and Biochemistry and Sports Sciences.

The college is committed to giving students at all levels excellent exposition in scientific thinking and high-level foundation of science that will shape and direct their lives long after they leave us. Our Science graduates go on to careers in applied science, education, engineering, finance, business, Information technology and management. Those with higher degrees often find pleasure in research institutions and academia.

Our staff are deeply involved in teaching and are passionate about research. Together, the college has won substantial competitive grants that have kept the faculty at the helm of research making us a leading unit in research and publication. Scientific consultancies and collaborative research have continued to keep the College and its staff in the limelight.

Makerere University is undergoing structural and innovative changes, with transformations geared towards improved service. CoNAS is indeed involved in these changes. Of recent, our programmes have been reviewed and as a result, new dimensions have brought life into science with demand-driven, interdisciplinary and integrated curricula. New programmes such as;  1) Bachelor of Science, 2) Bachelor of Sports Science, 3) Bachelor of Science in Biotechnology, 4) Bachelor of Science in Conservation Biology, 5) Bachelor of Science in Fisheries and Aquaculture, 6) Bachelor of Science in Petroleum Geosciences and Production, 7) Master of Science in Petroleum Geosciences and Production, 8) Master of Science in Geology, 9) Master of Science in Physics, 10) Master of Science in Biochemistry, 11) Master of Science in Zoology, and 13) Master of Science in Botany, have brought a shift to making science a first choice centrer, and the public is encouraged to take chance of this trend.

The impact of our college is measured by the accomplishments of both staff and students we graduate. Some of our staff have contributed towards research done in international laboratories that have won Nobel Prize.

It is impossible to speak of the College of Natural Sciences without saying a word about our support staff. These people are without a doubt one of the most important cogs in our College; we could not get along without them. The dedication of this wonderful team is remarkable.

Finally, I mention that a degree in Science at Makerere is no longer a mere education in a discipline. It is a journey that opens opportunities towards national and international leadership in science and technology.

You are all welcome to our website that should take you through the various services CoNAS offers.
