The African Primatological Conference 2015

The 1st African Primatological Conference APC conference was held for two days from 15th to 16th of December 2015 at Makerere University hosted by the College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS). The conference was organized by African Primatological Consortium (APC) who is charged with coordinating collaborative research and building the capacity of young primatologists.  As part of the conference, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) will also be signed between Makerere University and Kyoto University, Japan to guide the partnership between the two institutions. The conference was held under the main theme of ‘Building African Primate Research and Conservation networks’ and with sub-themes: Ecology and behavior of African primates; Primate Health and emerging diseases; and Conservation and management of African primates and other wildlife

APC brings together primatologists from Uganda, Japan, Belgium, Cameroon, Canada, Congo Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Guinea, Kenya, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, United Kingdom and United States of America. The Consortium was formed in December 2014 with the aim of championing African Primate Research and Conservation through collaborations in research and capacity building.

The conference was officially opened by Professor J.Y.T Mugisha, the Principal of CoNAS. In his remarks, Prof. Mugisha expressed his gratitude for the support from Kyoto University, Japan and noted that as a college we look forward to a close working relationship with our partners following the MoU that will be signed. The Principal also delivered the message from the Vice Chancellor’s. The Vice Chancellor underscored the appreciation by Makerere University to support from partners through which Makerere is able to advance its innovation and research capacity and output.  He also thanked the APC for allowing Makerere to host the conference and wished all the visitors a peaceful stay in Uganda. The principal then proceeded to declare the conference open, wishing participants fruitful deliberations during the meeting.
