Prof. Livingstone S. Luboobi was one of the recipients of the independence medal awarded at this year’s (51st) Independence celebrations in Rukungiri District. He was recognised for his long and dedicated service to higher education in Uganda. He is a Professor of Biomathematics in the Department of Mathematics, College of Natural Sciences – Makerere University.
Professor Luboobi joined Makerere University as a Special Assistant in 1970 but he had also served as a tutorial in his 3rd year of his undergraduate studies (1966-1969). He was promoted to the rank of lecturer in 1973, senior lecturer in 1977, associate professor in 1985 before becoming a full professor in 1997. He has taught courses at undergraduate and graduate level in addition to supervising research at MSc. and PhD. Professor Luboobi has also served the University in other leadership and management capacities: Head-Department of Mathematics; Dean-Faculty of Science for two terms (1994 – 2001); and Vice Chancellor of Makerere University (2004-2009). He has worn various scholarly awards both at Makerere and internationally.
Professor Luboobi has supervised and mentored students at graduate level, many of whom have stayed to serve Makerere University in various capacities. The current Principal of the College of Natural Sciences, Professor Mugisha was supervised by Professor Luboobi at both Masters and PhD levels. His other supervisees include: Dr. D’ujanga who is a Senior Lecturer and former Head-Department of Physics; Dr. Nannyonga Betty, a lecturer in the Department of Mathematics was also supervised by Professor Luboobi.
