The 19th Summer School of the East African Universities Mathematics Programme (EAUMP) was officially opened by the Deputy Vice Chancellor – Academic Affairs, Prof. Umar Kakumba on the 15th July 2019. The summer school hosted by the Department of Mathematics has attracted participants from Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Nigeria, Egypt, Sudan, Botswana, France and United Kingdom will run for two weeks ending on the 30th July 2019.
In his opening remarks, Prof. Kakumba welcomed all the participants to Uganda and Makerere. He delivered warm greetings from the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University and lauded the Department of Mathematics for the various initiatives on knowledge growth. Prof. Kakumba highlighted mathematics as a key ingredient of sciences showing its link to ICTs, data and artificial intelligence among others. ‘The strength of Makerere as a top university in Africa and its research output exhibits the excellence, innovations and solutions for the local population that we deliver’, he noted. The networks that Makerere University has built have been instrumental for our growth. ‘As an institution, the university appreciates the College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS) and Department of Mathematics for the networks and partnerships that it has leveraged for knowledge seeking’, he further said. Prof. Kakumba encouraged the young mathematicians to learn from the seniors in the meeting for their further development.
