School of Physical Sciences
DEAN’S MESSAGE
The School of Physical Sciences (SPS) is one of the two schools of the College of Natural Sciences, Makerere University. It was introduced after the transformation of Makerere University into a collegiate university effective 1st July 2011, headed by a Dean. The mission of the SPS strives to educate the next generation of physical scientists who are equipped to make informed decisions for the development of society. Our students are provided with concepts and methods in the physical sciences and are challenged to be creative, analytical and critical, able to communicate their knowledge and experiences to the general public.
The SPS has four departments including Chemistry, Geology and Petroleum Studies, Mathematics, and Physics. Disciplines handled include, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Geology & Petroleum studies, as well as support to BSc students who major/ minor in Economics, Statistics and Computer Sciences. We offer undergraduate (BSc) degree programmes over 3 and 4 years. The graduate programmes include the MSc degree by coursework and dissertation over 2 years; and the PhD degree is by coursework and dissertation or by research only over 3 to 4 years. Each curriculum is designed to prepare graduates for specific professional positions in industry, government, research and professional work in their disciplines. The SPS runs blended learning teaching, research and community outreach programmes with lecture, laboratory and field station facilities.
The faculty are accomplished and innovative teachers with exceptional skills in the specialized courses of physical sciences, preparing undergraduate and graduate students for the highly-competitive employment market and graduate programs that await after graduation. We encourage interdisciplinary interactions through international student exchanges, and industry-academia collaboration. Students participate in university and national exhibitions, student conferences, field classes, visiting professional lectureships, industrial internship placements, becoming independent and capable practitioners. There are vibrate student organizations from the college to the respective departments interfacing and networking with various professional associations. Our graduates are also highly desirable and recruited within their field of specialization locally and beyond. We are proud to say that many of our past students hold significant positions today and make a valuable contribution to the nation through their work in different fields, such as research, teaching, and community outreach, both in the government and private sectors.
Detailed information about the SPS requirements, academic programmes and activities can be accessed from the respective departmental websites. I invite you to take advantage of the engaging and inspiring courses we offer, and I hope that your learning experience will be rewarding and enjoyable, to reach your personal and career goals.
As we continue to Build for the Future, I thank you.
