Leadership is not defined by the authority attached to a position, but by the willingness to serve, inspire and empower others. Servant leadership places people at the centre of leadership, emphasizing humility, integrity, empathy, accountability and a commitment to helping others grow. It is this approach to leadership that the Makerere University Biochemistry Society seeks to nurture among student leaders.

In line with this vision, students from the Department of Biochemistry and Systems Biology, particularly members of the Makerere University Biochemistry Society Cabinet and several Masters students, have undergone training in servant leadership.

Organised by the Biochemistry Society under the patronage of Dr. Barbara Nerima, the initiative sought to strengthen the students’ leadership capacity and equip them with the values and practical skills needed to provide responsible and effective leadership within the University and beyond.

The programme was facilitated and co-funded by Development Associates International (DAI), Uganda Office, with additional financial support from Dr Isaac Ssewanyana of the Central Public Health Laboratories.

The training focused on the principles and practice of servant leadership, challenging participants to rethink leadership as an opportunity to serve others rather than an avenue for exercising authority. Participants were guided to appreciate the importance of listening, empathy, humility, integrity and accountability in building effective relationships and leading diverse teams.

Particular emphasis was placed on the responsibility of leaders to recognise and respond to the needs of those they serve. The participants were encouraged to use their leadership positions to create opportunities for others, promote teamwork, build trust and contribute to the growth and wellbeing of their peers.
