Honouring the Legacy of Prof. Robert Bob MacDonald – A Trailblazing Geologist
With deep respect and fond remembrance, we celebrate the life of Prof. Robert Bob MacDonald, who passed away peacefully on August 9, 2022, at the age of 91. A devoted husband, father, grandfather, and a lifelong geologist, Prof. MacDonald’s extraordinary journey left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Born in Ilford, Essex, UK, on December 19, 1930, Prof. MacDonald’s academic path led him from King’s College, London, to Uganda, where he served as a geologist with the British Colonial Service. He is fondly remembered for his significant contributions to geology in Uganda, including his instrumental role in establishing the Department of Geology at Makerere University in 1968.
His ground-breaking research on the Earth’s structure, mineral resources, and natural history not only advanced scientific understanding but also emphasized the deep connection between human activity and the environment. As a mentor, Prof. MacDonald inspired his students to embrace curiosity and pursue knowledge relentlessly, empowering many to continue his work in their own research and careers.
Beyond his professional achievements, Prof. MacDonald was known for his kindness, humility, and unwavering commitment to the greater good. He selflessly shared his expertise, helping communities and organizations gain a deeper understanding of the geology of their regions, and guiding efforts toward more sustainable resource management.
Prof. MacDonald’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched, the knowledge he shared, and the lasting contributions he made to the field of geology. We honour his memory with deep gratitude and respect, knowing his work will continue to inspire future generations of geologists and environmental stewards.
