On 7th January 2019, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe hosted a delegation from China University of Petroleum (UPC). The delegation was led by the Vice Chancellor, China University of Petroleum, Prof. Yao Jun, accompanied by the Director International Affairs, China University of Petroleum, prof. Huang Fang, Deputy Dean School of Geosciences, Prof. Pei Yangwen, Deputy Dean School of Petroleum Engineering, Prof. Yang Shaochun, Department of Petroleum Geology of School of Geosciences, and Prof. Sun Renyuan, Department of Reservoir Engineering, School of Petroleum Engineering.
The meeting was also attended by the Principal of College of Natural Sciences (CoNAS), Prof. J.Y.T Mugisha, the Principal of College of Engineering, Design Art and Technology, the Principal of College of Business and Management Sciences (CoBAMS), Assoc. Prof. Eria Hisali, The Deputy Vice Chancellor Academic Affairs, Assoc. Prof. Umaru Kakumba, Makerere University management members, staff from CoNAS, Makerere University Public Relations team and officials from Sunmaker Energy Uganda Limitedled by the Principal, Mr. Ma Bo and Deputy Principal, Duan Xiaofei.
This meeting follows the previous visits between Makerere University and UPC at which a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed in 2017 between the two institutions aimed at leveraging expertise at UPC to establish an Institute of Petroleum Geosicence/Engineering at Makerere University.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University, Prof. Nawangwe said, ‘College of Natural Sciences will head the initiative on the side of Makerere, although input from College of Engineering, Design Art and Technology will be needed as well as other colleges’.
In his remarks, Prof. Jun Yao commended Makerere University for the tremendous research that is carried out in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). He further said, ' I look forward to a successful implementation and operational journey of the establishment of the Institute of Geosciences and Petroleum at Makerere University.
