Dr. Betty Kivumbi Nannyonga was inducted as a Fellow of the Uganda National Academy of Sciences (UNAS) at its 17th Annual Scientific Conference held on the 27th of October 2017 at Africana Hotel in Kampala. UNAS is a membership-based autonomous body that brings together a diverse group of scientists and whose main goal is to promote excellence in sciences and whose vision is to become an eminent body of scientists offering independent evidence-based policy advice for the prosperity of Uganda. Dr. Betty Kivumbi Nannyonga is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Mathematics, College of Natural Sciences of Makerere University. Her areas of specialization include Applied Mathematics in Epidemics, Ecology, Social sciences and Health Economics. She is actively involved in mentoring; strengthening and supporting the success and retention of women in basic sciences by enlightening science students on how gender construction influences their identity and sense of achievement. Since attaining her PhD in 2012, Dr. Nannyonga has supervised 7 PhDs, 2 to completion, five on-going, 27 Masters Students, 12 completed and 15 on-going. She has several publications in peer reviewed journals. She is also a mentor in the College of Natural Sciences, and on the Master Card Foundation Scholarship Scheme at Makerere University.At the same event Professor Deborah Baranga from the Department of Zoology, Entomology & Fisheries Sciences and Associate Professor Eseza Kakudidi from the Department of Plant Sciences, Microbiology and Biotechnology were also inducted as Fellows of UNAS.
